Practice Like a Pro – Day #8 – Pitching Pressure

Practice like a PGA Pro…no, not Tiger Woods.  Me…Brandon Evans…a local PGA Pro with a fun job which occupies 8-12 hours of energy per day, 2 kids and a beautiful wife at home who I love spending time with, an affinity for landscaping, and too little time to practice golf.

Day #8 – Pitching Pressure

Focus:  Pitching - Mental

Description:  How confident are you in hitting delicate pitch shots over a bunker to a tight pin placement?  Ever practice that shot…under pressure?  This drill will test your nerve.  Take 25 golf balls and place them 5-10 feet in front of a bunker.   Place a golf club, bucket, or some other marker 10 – 15 feet from the bunker on the opposite side.  Hit 25 balls over the bunker, counting 1 point for a shot landing between the bunker and your marker, 0 points for a shot landing past the marker, and -1 point for a shot landing in the bunker.  Adjust your marker further or closer to the bunker depending on your ability level.  Record your points for future reference to determine improvement.

Objective:  Hit 25 shots.

Time:  7 minutes…18 points.

That’s a great drill. Thanks for the tip.

For those who need a little more mercy, it’s possible to put a first marker club at 10 feet, second at 20 feet, and even a third at 30 feet beyond the bunker, with scores of 3 inside the first, 2 inside the second, 1 inside the third. Goal with 25 balls would be a score of at least 60 (but could be higher for a learner). Pressure builds with later shots if you’ve been too easy on yourself with the earlier ones.
